NIKE - Run by Rebels (in Seoul)
This Film was filmed last year. As a Korean DP, I worked with Danish director Lasse and American DP Khalid. We wanted to capture PPPC’s running and their lifestyle in various aspects of Seoul and fortunately they showed us their true selves. PPPC running in Jamsu-bridge were shoted using Russian Arm, but we tried to express the vivid texture of Seoul and took a large portion of the film with handheld techniques and Movi. Parts of the Film were shoted directly by director Lasse using DVCAM. Working with them, I learned and felt many things. This work was definitely meaningful to me.

One of the biggest things I felt while working on this film was that our eyes are so clever that we always adapt to light and darkness. That's why we think that the lit street lamps that we see on the streets of the night are very bright, but if they are on during the day, they don't feel so bright at all.
Likewise, there should be a brighter or darker part of the screen we are shoting than the subject that we're trying to express, and it will be as expressive as we want. If all parts of the screen are bright or dark, the subject will not be as expressive as we want it to be.
It is necessary that there is a contrast to that on the screen to express the subject we want. It is very simple but very important for everything we do.

We shoted the day scene of this film with the lens exposed set to 1 1/2 Stop to 2 Stop under. But look at this film, is it dark or doesn't it reveal the expressions we want? Doesn't the day look like day? No, I think it is expressed well enough.

We habitually film daylight scenes brightly, but it will look like day enough without necessarily shooting them brightly.
If everything on the screen is bright, it will be harder to express what we want and the person watching it is dazzling.

Light exists only when there is light, and darkness exists when there is light.
